mailto:email@example.com The Buttery began as a youth refuge and drop in centre in 1973, operating under the auspices of the Anglican Church and the Diocese of Grafton. It received its first government grant in 1975 and the first constitution was introduced in 1979. Over the years it has evolved into the largest provider of drug and alcohol and gambling services based in the Northern Rivers Region and is acknowledged by clients, stakeholders and other service providers as one of the best organisations of its kind in Australia. Today The Buttery Inc consists of 3 distinct services: a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre operating as a therapeutic community; an outpatient/outreach drug counselling and education service; and an outreach/outpatient gambling counselling and education service. The Buttery's status as an independent, community based charitable organisation is founded on the following points: It has a membership base that is open to all individuals and incorporated organisations who subscribe to its aims and principles and its constitution; It is governed by a Board of Directors that is comprised of volunteers from the local community, the majority of whom are elected by the members of The Buttery; It is funded primarily by or through Government Agencies and Programs, but accountability arrangements to funders and donors can not override or contradict the aims, principles and rules spelt out in its constitution. These aims, principles and rules can only be amended by the members; It is a non-profit organisation and, wherever possible, seeks to provide services free of charge or at cost. Any profit or income, including grants, subsidies and donations, is to be applied to the aims set out in the constitution. No money is distributed to any member; It has been granted the authority to fundraise under the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991 by the NSW Office of Charities and The Australian Taxation Office has granted tax deduction status for donations of $2.00 or more to The Buttery.
